TOPIC: Newspaper Scavenger Hunt

OBJECTIVES:

1) Knowledge:

study a number of topics in areas such as planning, urban issues, urban politics, quality of life and the effects of societal trends on the use of urban space. (BGA)

2) Skills:

select and develop an organizer for the inquiry. (BGA)

3) Attitude:

derive satisfaction from the process and product of individual and group research.

RESOURCE MATERIAL:

Local newspaper.
Sample organizer

INSTRUCTIONS:

Divide the class into groups of two to three members.
Hand out the organizer sample.
Explain the purpose of the exercise: to find newspaper articles relating to the twenty-five topics, cut them out (originals) and gain points (max- 111)
Set a due date i.e. one week.
Do scavenger hunt on their own for a couple of days, then allow class time to: a) evaluate articles in terms of suitability; b) staple to organizer

EVALUATION:

Assign marks for topics completed i.e. five topics = 2 ; ten topics = 4; fifteen topics = 6; twenty topics = 8; twenty five topics = 10
Bonus points for winners i.e. 1st = 2; 2nd = 1

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS: .

Students could design another exercise with different questions.
